Madeira Botanical Garden: Tickets, Cable Car and What to See

The Arboretum And The Lovers' Grotto

The arboretum fills the north part of the garden, close to the cable car station gate. It holds Laurissilva trees of Madeira such as Til, Vinhático, Folhado, Loureiro and Faia, and rare endemics including the dragon tree and the Madeira geranium. Exotics grow here too, among them sequoias, araucarias, magnolias, cedars and ginkgo.

Trails run under the trees and pass a small lake. In the upper west you find a grotto called gruta dos namorados, the lovers' grotto, with a view over Funchal.

Topiary, Mosaic Beds And The Santana House

Near the main house the garden does its most photographed work. The choreographed gardens are coloured plant mosaics laid out in patterns, alongside topiary clipped into animal and object shapes. A model of a traditional Santana house stands among them, a nod to the painted cottages of Santana on the north coast.

Succulents, Palms And Cycads

The succulent collection sits centre-east near the main house and holds about 200 species. Palms and cycads occupy the south section by the amphitheatre, a collection created in 1997 with about 44 species. The centre of the garden holds about 150 species and varieties of agro-industrial plants, including tropical and subtropical fruit trees, and about 80 species of aromatic and medicinal plants.

Madeira's Own Plants

Madeiran flora appears in two places. The arboretum carries the island's native trees, and the south section arranges Madeiran plants by altitude, from coast to high mountain. A conservation area protects Aichryson dumosum, a very rare endemic grown here ex situ because it is barely found in the wild.

Visit Madeira's listing also mentions an orchid area, lawns and a research and conservation area with a herbarium.

The Natural History Museum

Three rooms of the main building have housed the Natural History Museum since 1981. The collection came from the old Funchal Seminary museum and covers rocks, fossils, plants, stuffed birds, fish and reptiles. It is included in your garden ticket, as are temporary exhibitions, so it costs nothing extra to step inside.

The garden has two gates and which one you use depends entirely on how you arrive. Both lead into the landscaped areas, so you will not miss the main collections from either side. The key difference is where they sit on the slope and what they connect to.

One Ticket, One Entry

Your ticket expires when you leave the garden, save special situations. That means no popping out for lunch and walking back in on the same ticket, so plan food and stops inside your visit window. A Multibanco card terminal works at the gate but there is no ATM nearby, so bring cash or a card before you set out.

IFCN does not state how re-entry works for the special situations it mentions, so ask staff if your case applies.

The garden sits about 3 km from the centre of Funchal, at the top of the left bank of the Ribeira João Gomes in the parish of Santa Maria Maior. Four realistic ways in exist and each ends at a different gate. The table below sums them up with the published fares for the city bus and the cable car.

IFCN, the managing body, states the garden opens every day of the year except Christmas Day from 09:00 to 18:00, with tickets sold until 17:30. Visit Madeira's listing says 09:00 to 17:30 instead. The two sources disagree and nobody explains why.

IFCN runs the garden, so 18:00 closing with last tickets at 17:30 is the figure to plan around, but arriving before 16:00 gives you a buffer either way. The cable car from Monte keeps its own shorter day, 09:00-17:00 with last boarding at 16:50, closed 25 December. It also closed from 5 to 31 January 2026 for yearly maintenance, so in that month you arrive by bus, taxi or car.

The table below sets out three realistic plans. The short version works if you only want the mosaic beds near the main house. The full plan matches the official estimate.

The Monte day plan assumes you combine the hill with the garden in one outing.

IFCN is blunt about access. Paths often have steps and the garden is not prepared for wheelchairs. The site sits between 150 and 300 m altitude on a slope, and IFCN warns the climb may be hard for people with reduced mobility.

There is no accessible route published, so wheelchair users should call ahead on +351 291 145 590 before committing. Children are welcome. Entry for ages 6 to 12 costs $3.44 (€3) and under 6 is free, and IFCN only asks that children stay with an adult at all times.

Guided visits and children's workshops exist but are reserved for school groups, so no drop-in activities for families. A family of two adults and two children aged 8 and 10 pays $29.90 (€26) at the gate, our sum of the published rates.

Both gardens sit on the Monte side of the valley and both take half a day. They are different products. The Botanical Garden is a state-run scientific collection with the cheapest entry ticket of the two, while Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a private garden with a museum and a wine tasting built into its price.

For one adult the difference is $20.70 (€18) against $11.48 (€10), a gap of $9.18 (€8), our sum.

The classic sequence starts with the Funchal-Monte cable car from the Old Town at $18.37 (€16) one way. In Monte you have the church, the toboggan and Monte Palace. From Largo das Babosas the second cable car drops you at the Botanical Garden's north gate, and the combo ticket at $21.80 (€19) one way bundles the ride with entry.

From the garden you leave by the main gate and pick up bus 29, 30, 31 or 31A back towards the centre.
