Madeira Travel Tips: Plan the Trip Before You Land

The coastal record has a clear shape. June, July and August are almost dry in Funchal, 7.8 mm, 1.7 mm and 1.3 mm. October, November and December are the wettest months, 91.2 mm, 80.3 mm and 94.8 mm, and January and February stay above 67 mm.

Festivals That Fill the Rooms

The Flower Festival runs 29 April to 30 May 2027 in Funchal, with the grand allegorical parade on 2 May. The Atlantic Festival runs 4 to 27 June 2027, with fireworks over Funchal bay on the first three Saturdays of June. The Madeira Wine Festival ran 23 August to 13 September 2026, and its 2027 dates were not on the official pages we read.

Most of Madeira can be bought on the day. A few things cannot, and the trail system, new in 2026, is the one that catches people out.

• Trail slots. Every classified IFCN trail needs a booked slot on SIMplifica, children 12 and under included, who walk free but still book. The full walkthrough is on trail fees and booking.
• A PR1 exit plan. PR1 runs one-way from Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo and IFCN organises no return transport, so exit on PR1.1 to Ilha or PR1.2 to Achada do Teixeira, or book a transfer that collects you at Achada do Teixeira.
• A room, early, if your dates overlap the Flower Festival, the Atlantic Festival or the Wine Festival in Funchal.
• A hire car, if you are driving. Age and licence rules are set by each rental company, not by a regional rule. Compare on car hire in Madeira.
• Tours with early pickups, which list free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, so an early booking costs little if the plan moves.
• Nothing else needs booking ahead. Monte Palace sells at its kiosk and online at the same price, and the Monte toboggan sells on site only and may close early on busy or wet days.

There are four ways to move, in order of independence. A hire car is the most flexible, and the VE expressways and their tunnels are toll-free under the SCUT regime. Driving is on the right.

Compare car hire in Madeira and check each company's own age rules, since no regional rule sets them. Public buses run under the regional SIGA system through three companies: Horários do Funchal in the city, Rodoeste in the west, and the eastern company now branded CAM, formerly SAM. Madeira uses the euro. The tax to plan for is the Funchal municipal tourist tax: $2.30 (€2) per person per night, capped at 7 consecutive nights, so $16.07 (€14) maximum per uninterrupted stay. It has applied to paid stays in hotels and local lodging in Funchal municipality since 1 October 2024, and to cruise passengers since 1 January 2025.

Other municipalities are reported to levy their own tourist taxes, but we could not confirm their rates on their own regulations, so treat any figure you read for them as unverified. Beyond the tax, costs are predictable because most operators publish their prices, as the comparison table above shows, and what Madeira costs builds a daily budget line by line. The table answers the questions that come up on the first evening. The region had 250,744 residents at the 2021 Census, 105,782 of them in Funchal municipality.

The risks that the official pages address are on the trails and at the sea. When you book a trail slot on SIMplifica you tick a declaration that users are personally and exclusively responsible for any damage during use, under article 11 of the regional decree. Check the live IFCN register before you set out, because closures change: PR1 runs one-way from Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo with no return transport from IFCN, and scheduled works have closed that upper section on announced days.

The coastal forecast does not describe the peaks, which IPMA notes are cooler and wetter, so check conditions the night before a mountain walk and read Madeira safety and health. At the rock pools, the Porto Moniz municipality warns that the sea at Poças das Lesmas often surprises bathers even when the swell looks harmless. The paid Porto Moniz pools state that lifeguards are always present.

Rain is not a refund reason for a trail booking, only an official closure is, so a wet forecast is a reason to pick your walking day late, not to lose a fee. The emergency number is 112.

• Rabaçal parking capacity. The council publishes the shuttle fare but no car park size or hours (Câmara Municipal da Calheta).
• Porto Santo ferry normal crossing time. The operator currently lists 3 hours 15 minutes for technical reasons and states no normal time (Porto Santo Line).
• CR7 Museum price and hours. The museum's own site returned no readable figures when fetched (museucr7.com).
• Mercado dos Lavradores opening hours. Widely reported hours exist, but the municipal markets portal was not directly readable (Câmara Municipal do Funchal markets portal).
• Monthly sea temperature. No official monthly normal was found, only IPMA's live sea-surface tool and municipal averages (IPMA).
• Tourist tax rates outside Funchal. Other municipalities are reported to charge the same rate, but their regulation texts were not read (each municipality's own platform).
