Where to Stay in Madeira: Seven Bases Compared

Lido and Estrada Monumental

This strip runs west of the centre along the coast road. The Aerobus reaches it directly from the airport, stopping at Estrada Monumental at 35 and 37 minutes, at the Lido at 38 minutes, and continuing to Fórum Madeira at 42 minutes and on along Estrada Monumental. That means one bus from the airport with no change, at $7.69 (€6.70) on board. It also puts the Praia Formosa stop at 50 minutes on the same line.

For food, the MICHELIN Guide 2026 lists William at Estrada Monumental 139, Il Gallo d'Oro at Estrada Monumental 147, which the guide notes is temporarily closed for refurbishment, and Avista and Avista Ásia at Estrada Monumental 145. Horta, a selected vegetarian entry, sits on Rua de Leichlingen. Treat these as pointers in our where to eat guide, not as hotel facilities. The 4WD tour to Porto Moniz and Fanal names central Funchal as its pickup zone, so check at booking that your address falls inside it.

Centre and Zona Velha

The Aerobus reaches this base faster, at the Mercado stop 22 minutes from the airport, Avenida do Mar at 24 minutes, Plaza Madeira at 26 minutes and Avenida do Infante at 32 minutes. From there you walk to the Mercado dos Lavradores, the waterfront, and the Funchal cable car up to Monte.

The MICHELIN Guide 2026 lists Ákua on Rua dos Murças, a few metres from the sea in the historic centre, Desarma on Rua das Maravilhas, and Casal da Penha on Rua Penha de França with a Bib Gourmand. Again, these are restaurant entries from our where to eat guide. This is the part of town the tour listings call central Funchal, and the east tour to Pico Arieiro and Santana collects in Funchal.

Both bases share the same bus, the same pickup zone and the same $2.30 (€2) a night tourist tax. More detail in the Funchal guide and the Funchal old town guide.

Read the columns together and a pattern appears. Funchal appears in every pickup list. Caniço appears in all but one. Câmara de Lobos, Santa Cruz and Machico appear once or twice each. Ponta do Sol and Madalena do Mar appear only because the Rabaçal hiking transfer collects along its route.

No tour on this page lists pickup in Calheta town, Santana or Porto Moniz. If you sleep in one of those bases without a car, every tour means a morning bus or taxi to a pickup point first. Transport first. The Aerobus does not go to Caniço or anywhere outside Funchal, so arrival and departure mean a taxi, a transfer or the SIGA bus network. The airport sits in Santa Cruz, 19.1 km from Funchal and about 17 minutes away by car by the city's own figure. No official drive time from Caniço is published.

Tours make Caniço workable. The east tour to Pico Arieiro and Santana, the eastern tour with rum tasting, the west waterfalls and Fanal tour, the Rabaçal hiking transfer and the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço transfer all name Caniço as a pickup zone.

Tax next. Santa Cruz charges its own Ecotaxa Turística, $2.30 (€2) per night up to 7 nights and capped at $16.07 (€14) per guest, with children under 13 exempt, per the regulation text published in Diário da República. Calheta

Calheta municipality lists Rabaçal among its trails, which means the PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes at 4.3 km each way and the PR6.1 Risco route at 3 km each way start within a drive. The last road stretch to Casa do Rabaçal is closed to private cars, so drivers park above and walk down or take a local shuttle van, whose fare is not confirmed on an official page. No tour in this guide's list names Calheta town as a pickup, although the Rabaçal hiking transfer collects in Ponta do Sol and Madalena do Mar.

Calheta charges $2.30 (€2) per person per night up to 7 consecutive nights, all year, since 1 October 2024, per its municipal FAQ.

Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol is the one west-coast base with a named tour pickup, again on the Rabaçal hiking transfer, which collects in the centre. That makes it the compromise base for hikers who want a west-coast address without hiring a car for every walk. No official tourist tax figure was read for this municipality.

Secondary reports vary, so check the tax line in your booking total.

Santana

Santana puts two classified trailheads close by. The PR1.2 route from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo runs 2.8 km each way. The PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde starts at Queimadas and runs 8.7 km each way.

Note that hikers finishing the full PR1 crossing exit at Achada do Teixeira or Ilha, both on the north side, and no return transport is arranged, so plan the car swap before you set out. No tour lists pickup in Santana, and no official tourist tax figure was read for this municipality.

Porto Moniz

Porto Moniz is the far northwest and a slow-travel base. The natural pools charge $3.44 (€3) entry for visitors over 3 and open 09:00 to 17:00 in winter and 09:00 to 19:00 in summer. No tour on this page lists pickup here, although the 4WD north-west tour has Porto Moniz on its route.

The Funchal tax has been in force since 1 October 2024 and applies to all paid stays in hotels and Alojamento Local whatever the booking channel. An interrupted stay restarts the count, so two separate bookings in Funchal each get their own 7-night cap. Calheta states the same mechanics: two consecutive stays in different establishments each count up to 7 nights, and a guest turning 13 during the stay pays from that night.

The worked example, our sum: two adults spending 7 nights in Funchal pay $2.30 (€2) each per night, which is $32.10 (€28) in total. The same two adults for 10 nights in one continuous stay pay the same $32.10 (€28), because the cap cuts in at 7 nights.

Funchal works because three systems overlap there. Caniço runs second, with five of the tours compared here collecting there, but the Aerobus does not reach it. VE expressways are toll-free, which matters only if you later change your mind and rent a car.

• The Aerobus runs from the airport to Funchal for $7.69 (€6.70) on board, stopping in the centre and on the Lido strip, with the last departure from the airport at 22:00.
• The SIGA buses run through Horários do Funchal in the city, CAM in the east and Rodoeste in the west, with an on-board ticket between municipalities at $3.04 (€2.65).

Funchal still matters to hikers, because the Pico do Arieiro hiking options start from there and the mountain road begins in town. Santana is the strongest hiking base once you have a car, with Pico Ruivo and the Caldeirão Verde valley on its side of the ridge. Remember that hikers completing the full PR1 crossing exit north at Achada do Teixeira or Ilha with no return transport laid on, so plan the pickup in advance.
