What The Beach Is Made Of

Frente MarFunchal, the municipal company that runs it, calls Praia Formosa the largest rolled-pebble beach on Madeira, typically Madeiran, 2 km long, known as the beach of Madeirans. Visit Madeira describes it as a complex of four beaches with pebbles and black sand stretching over 2 km. During the bathing season several areas of black sand appear, so the surface you lie on depends on the time of year and the exact spot you pick.

If you have flown in expecting golden sand, temper the expectation: this is the island's beach reality, and it is one of the best versions of it. The only true wide golden sand on the archipelago is on Porto Santo.

Swimming Conditions And Safety

This is the Atlantic, so swell happens. Frente MarFunchal lists Praia Formosa as a lifeguarded beach during the bathing season, with a defibrillator on site and the Golden Beach flag. Lifeguards work only in season, so check which flag is flying before you go in.

Showers and WCs are available all year, and there are support bars on the beach. Visit Madeira also lists a first-aid post on the beach complex. Our view: swim where the lifeguards can see you, and treat the pebbles underfoot as part of the deal.

Our Advice On Footwear

Rolled pebbles are smooth but hard and hot underfoot, and the drop into the water can be steeper than on sand. In our view swim shoes are worth packing for Praia Formosa, especially for children and anyone with sensitive feet. This is our judgement from the beach's published character, not an official recommendation, since no official page mentions footwear at all.

The 2026 Price List For Praia Formosa

The table lists every price in the tariff that applies at Praia Formosa itself, with the worked dollar conversion. Entry is not on the list because there is no entry fee. Notice the difference from the bathing complexes: at Praia Formosa you pay per item, at Lido or Ponta Gorda you pay to get in.

How That Compares With The Paid Complexes

At the four paid bathing complexes in Funchal, Lido, Ponta Gorda, Barreirinha and Doca do Cavacas, a day entry is $6.89 (€6) for an adult. Youth aged 7 to 17 with proof, retired people on the Portuguese pension system and people with disability pay $2.30 (€2). Children 6 and under enter free with an adult.

From The Airport: The Aerobus

The Aerobus airport line runs from the airport (stop 01) to Praia Formosa (stop 26) in 50 minutes, passing the Lido and the Estrada Monumental hotels on the way. From the airport the fare is $7.69 (€6.70) on board, or $6.37 (€5.55) prepaid on a GIRO card, fares in force from 1 April 2026. That makes Praia Formosa the one beach in Madeira you can reach directly from the plane, and in our view it is a legitimate first stop if you land in the morning.

From Central Funchal By Town Bus

The municipal on-board fare is $2.35 (€2.05) and a prepaid GIRO trip is $1.66 (€1.45) under the SIGA tariff. Here is the honest limit of our sources: no bus line number from central Funchal to the beach appears in the pages we hold, so we cannot tell you which line to take. Check the operator's own network map or ask at a tourist office.

On Foot Along The Promenades

Visit Madeira says the beach connects to the Lido promenade, which runs along the seafront east of the beach, and to a second, pedestrian-only promenade that links the beach to Câmara de Lobos to the west. Both are used for running and walking. If you are staying anywhere on the Estrada Monumental hotel strip, you can walk down to the beach on the flat Lido promenade without a car.

By Car And Parking

Visit Madeira calls the beach only a 10-minute drive from the city centre, which is Visit Madeira's figure, and lists parking among the beach facilities, as does Frente MarFunchal. No official page we hold publishes the parking capacity or an hourly price, so we will not print one. If you have a hire car, arriving early in high season is our pick.

Two Directions, Both Flat

Visit Madeira lists two walking connections. To the east, the Lido promenade links the beach with the Lido area and its bathing complex. To the west, a second promenade connects Praia Formosa to Câmara de Lobos, a pedestrian zone used for walking and running.

No official source we hold publishes the length or the walking time of either stretch, so plan by daylight rather than by a printed duration. Câmara de Lobos is a working fishing town worth a visit of its own.

What You Pass On The Way

The Lido direction takes you past the paid bathing complexes of the Funchal seafront, and the westward route follows the coast towards the cliffs near Cabo Girão, whose glass skywalk is one of Madeira's best-known viewpoints, read about it in our Cabo Girão guide. The beach itself has support bars, so you can break a promenade walk with a drink without leaving the sand.

The Beach Itself Is Always Open

The beach has open access with no closed days. Lifeguards, the defibrillator coverage and the black-sand areas all belong to the bathing season. The one thing no official page we hold publishes is the bathing season dates themselves, so we cannot give them to you, and you should not trust anyone who does without a source.

How The Complexes Shorten Their Hours

The pattern is easiest to see at the paid complexes on the same seafront. For the period 16 to 30 September, Lido, Ponta Gorda and Barreirinha open every day 09:00-19:00 and Doca do Cavacas 10:00-20:00, and hours are posted per period, so they change through the year. That tells you how the Funchal seafront trims itself down after the peak months even while the beach stays open.

Water And Air, What Is Published

Madeiran municipal tourism describes sea water averaging 22°C in summer and 18°C in winter, attributing that figure to Visit Machico's tourism pages. It is a municipal statement, not a meteorological normal, but it sets expectations: the Atlantic here is never warm, and never freezing either.

Praia Formosa is a morning or afternoon block, not a full-day commitment, and it slots easily around Funchal. A common shape: swim in the morning before the sun peaks, walk the Lido promenade east for lunch in the hotel strip or west to Câmara de Lobos, and spend the late afternoon in central Funchal at the market or the old town. Because the Aerobus stops here on its airport run, it also works as a first-hour stop on arrival day, bags and all.
