The Bay And The Xavelha Boats

The bay is the reason to come. Colourful fishing boats called xavelhas sit in the harbour, and the town climbs the slope behind them. This is where João Gonçalves Zarco first settled, staying 1420 to 1424, with parish status by 1430.

The name comes from the sea lions, lobos-marinhos, that once filled the cove. No official page names a black scabbardfish fishing tradition for the town, so treat that claim with care.

Chapel, Church And Convent

Three old buildings cluster within walking distance of the water. The Nossa Senhora da Conceição chapel at the bay dates from the end of the 15th century. São Sebastião Church is officially recorded as built in 1426.

The Convent of São Bernardino is 15th century with Baroque additions per Visit Madeira's list.

Kiln, Gardens And Beaches

The Forno da Cal lime kiln was built in 1874 and stands as a reminder of the town's working past. The Ilhéu Gardens and São Francisco Gardens give you green space above the bay. For swimming, Visit Madeira lists Vigário Beach as the main bathing spot, called the beach of Câmara de Lobos, and the Salinas Bathing Complex with its two swimming pools.

Estreito De Câmara De Lobos

Up in the hills, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos is vineyard country. It hosts the Festa das Vindimas grape harvest festival, covered in the food section below.

Pico da Torre is the free view most visitors miss. Espírito Santo is where Churchill set up his easel in January 1950 and painted the bay, though no official page states its height. The skywalk is the paid option and its own page, Cabo Girão, covers it in depth.

Eira do Serrado looks the other way, down onto Curral das Freiras.

The 2.2 Km Seafront

The Câmara de Lobos Promenade is a 2.2 km walkway by the sea between the Ponta da Cruz area and the bay, per Visit Madeira. It connects to the Funchal seafront, which runs west past Ponta Gorda to Ponta da Cruz and continues toward Câmara de Lobos. No official page publishes a walking time for the full route, so allow whatever pace suits you and turn back or hop on a bus when your legs say so.

Rodoeste runs numbered services from Funchal into the municipality: line 1 to Vargem and Caminho da Ribeira Real, line 96 to Jardim da Serra, line 137 to Covão and Estreito, line 154 to Fontainhas, plus dedicated locality timetables for Câmara de Lobos itself. By Car Or Tour

Children under 6 ride free and ages 6 to 12 pay half the single fare. If you drive, compare options on our car hire page, and see getting around Madeira for the wider picture. The Rate And The Cap

The tax is $2.30 (€2) per guest per night, capped at 7 consecutive nights, a maximum of $16.07 (€14) per guest. It applies to paid overnight stays in tourist accommodation and Alojamento Local whatever the booking type, and guests aged 13 and over pay it.

Exemptions And How It Is Collected

Exempt: guests under 13 with ID, guests with a permanent disability of 60 percent or more, overnight stays for medical treatment plus one accompanying person with proof, disaster relocation stays declared by the municipality, complimentary stays offered by the accommodation and stays contracted by the municipality itself. The accommodation collects the tax, itemises it on the invoice and it falls due by the end of your stay. One quirk: if your stay is interrupted, a fresh count of up to 7 nights starts when you return, so 3 nights plus a gap plus 7 more means 10 taxed nights in total.

Poncha's Claimed Birthplace

A Visit Madeira blog says it is claimed that poncha was invented in Câmara de Lobos, and that this is where you can drink the best ones. The Grape Harvest In Estreito

Estreito de Câmara de Lobos holds the Festa das Vindimas, its grape harvest festival, with live picking, an ethnographic procession, wine treading and a wine competition. The 2025 edition ran 12 to 14 September, organised with municipal support, and no 2026 date has been published, so mid-September is the window to watch for on the municipal agenda. It sits inside the wider regional Wine Festival, whose 2026 edition ran 23 August to 13 September across Funchal and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos.

• The town's name comes from the sea lions, lobos-marinhos, that once lived in the cove. Today none greet you, only the xavelha boats (Visit Madeira, Câmara de Lobos page).
• Winston Churchill painted the bay in January 1950 from the Espírito Santo Viewpoint, which is its official name rather than any Churchill viewpoint (Visit Madeira, Câmara de Lobos bay page).
• The municipality is the second most populous in the region, with around 40 thousand inhabitants, and Curral das Freiras is its largest parish (Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos and Visit Madeira).
• The Rancho cable car down to the Fajã do Cabo Girão was built for Quinta Grande farmers to reach their fields. Its fare and hours are not published on the official page (Visit Madeira).
• A skywalk entry fee is not printed on the municipality's own site. The ticket is issued by the regional heritage directorate through SIMplifica, which is where the $5.74 (€5) figure comes from (Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos and SIMplifica).

Pick the row that matches your day. The skywalk is open daily 08:00 to 20:00, which gives you a long window either side of the town lunch rush.

Morning works best. Take a Rodoeste bus from Funchal before the bay fills, walk the promenade into town, and spend the middle of the day on the harbour, the chapel and a long lunch. If the skywalk is on your list, ride up after lunch while the 08:00-20:00 window is still wide open. If you would rather hand the driving to someone else, the West Madeira Waterfalls and Fanal Forest tour collects in the town and covers the west coast in its 8 hours as listed by the operator.

With a full day, add the hills. Eira do Serrado at 1,095 m gives you the free view into Curral das Freiras, and the valley village below makes a natural second stop. In mid-September the harvest festival in Estreito can fill the afternoon instead.
